Bedtime routines that actually stick

Editorial preview1 min read

Bedtime doesn't have to be a battle. The families who get the smoothest nights usually aren't doing anything elaborate. They've simply found a short sequence of steps that happens the same way, in the same order, every evening, until the routine itself becomes the signal that it's time to slow down.

Start with the wind-down long before the lights go out. A warm bath, pajamas, a glass of water, and then the part everyone looks forward to: a story together. Keeping the order consistent matters more than the exact activities. Children relax when they know what comes next.

The story is the anchor. It's the moment the day narrows down to one voice, one lap, and one page at a time. Choose something familiar on the hard nights and something new on the easy ones, and let your child hold the book so the ritual feels like theirs.

Finally, keep the goodbye short and sweet. A hug, a line you say every night, and the door left open just a crack. Over a few weeks the whole routine becomes a kind of lullaby, and bedtime stops being something to get through and starts being something to look forward to.
